Friday in Friday Harbor

Arriving on the ferry from Anacortes
The memorable camperdown elm

FRIDAY HARBOR, WA -- We revisited Friday Harbor last Friday, a cheap day trip on the ferry from Anacortes.
If you can catch a non-stop ferry, the trip is only an hour, on a ship big enough for 200+ vehicles and 2,000 passengers.  We didn't have any trouble finding a seat.
The main, touristy part of Friday Harbor is perched on a bluff overlooking the harbor and the ferry dock.
One of my favorite spots in town is the camperdown elm, a 100-year-old tree that has been pruned over the years to completely shade the front yard of a small business.  A sign near the tree explains that it's a graft of an American and an Asian elm.
The first time I visited Friday Harbor, in 1991, the business was a restaurant, and I had dinner with two friends at a wrought-iron table under the tree.  The restaurant is no more, and today the small building houses, perhaps more appropriately, a garden shop.
