At Logan Pass in Glacier National Park, where we ate our lunch when we were working, I often found myself stalked by ravens who felt a strong sense of entitlement to my sandwich. These birds were big enough for a decent-sized Thanksgiving main course, and when challenged, would hop back an inch or two and then plot to move in again.
In Washington, a popular swimming beach at Deception Pass was closed indefinitely because of more than a little goose poop. Canada geese have learned that it really isn't necessary to go all that far south for the winter, or to go all the way back to Canada for the summer.
The geese can simply hang around in Washington full time rather than moving house twice per year. Although we didn't see any of them at the beach, we did see a number flying over, headed north.
And when we had lunch in Friday Harbor, we were greeted by this sign warning us of thieving crows.
