ANACORTES, WA -- In our first two hours after driving off the Malaspina Tuesday morning, we drove from Bellingham to Anacortes, ate breakfast, got Prince Charming his first haircut in five months and started two loads of laundry in a local laundomat.
After four months in Alaska, where even the simplest projects can be difficult and are guaranteed to be expensive, it felt good to do ordinary things again, like pick up sandwiches at the supermarket, take them down by the water and watch the boats go by. This is what we did for lunch Tuesday, and again at yet another of the many area waterfront parks, Wednesday.
We aren't pressed for time, and so have spent two days hanging out in Anacortes, a place I've liked since my first visit on a bicycle trip in 1991.
It's been discovered since then, and has attracted sprawling upscale lookalike homes as well as gated communities, antique stores and interior design shops. So far all this hasn't ruined a place of maritime vistas accented by mountainous islands, all towered over by snow-capped Mount Baker to the east, at least on days when it's visible.
It's been a good place to rest awhile and decompress from the large adventure that is Alaska, to acclimate once again to a life of convenience.
