ALONG THE INSIDE PASSAGE, AK -- The ferries of the Alaska Marine Highway system have added wi-fi since last year.
Sadly, the ferry system has been unable to do anything about the weather. We are passing stupendous scenery. I know because I've seen pictures. But all I can see out our cabin window -- not a porthole but a big rectangular window -- is whitecapped waves and fog.
It was old home week in Skagway last night. Several of our former co-workers plus a couple of employees from this year cooked hamburgers out and we ate and laughed over old times, huddled together in the shelter of a gazebo to stay dry.
Yes, it was raining in Skagway again for our entire 18-hour visit.
Saturday morning at 8:30, the M/V Malaspina backed away from the ferry dock, past the Holland American cruise ship Zaandam. Then, with a groan and a shudder, the ferry's engines shifted from back to forward, and we turned right to head south down the Lynn Canal.
A howling wind and stinging rain make it uncomfortable to be out on deck, so we're sticking to our cabin or one of the observation lounges in case the weather suddenly changes so we can see something.
