Sunday morning in Santa FeSANTA FE, NM -- We arrived here Saturday evening and checked into a motel, because, with breakfast included, it cost only $10 more than a campground. Also, the low Saturday night was supposed to dip into the 20s. There is camping, and then there is crazy.
The plan was to spend Sunday morning exploring here and then wander on toward Colorado or Arizona or Utah.
Prince Charming, a weather junkie, started Sunday morning on his computer checking out the road ahead. It didn't look good for a couple of Florida drivers, as the whole radar-sweep to the north and west of here was expecting snow.
And sure enough, while we were loading the car, big cotton-ball-sized puffs began to land on our heads. It melted quickly when it hit anything.
We dug out rain-gear and followed through with our morning plan. The picture above is a windshield shot taken as we drove toward downtown, where, since it was Sunday, parking was free!
Santa Fe is a lovely place, even on an ugly day. Think St. Augustine multiplied by 10, but much heavier on museums, galleries and expensive stores than cheap souvenir shops. The Prince had to work hard to find two T-shirts to buy.
The snow continued off and on all day, with occasional moments of sunshine. At one point, we looked out a store window to see tiny balls of hail hammering down, piling up on sidewalks and turning to slush on cars. In half an hour it had all melted.
After lunch, we headed back to the same motel we'd checked out of early in the morning, and checked back in again. And here we are, safe and warm, with computers and my Kindle reader and a Borders bookstore next door.
Monday's forecast: Clear and much warmer.
