We are here!

(c) 2010 Lydia Hinshaw

I couldn't wait to hang my feet over the edge!

Plenty of the white stuff still lying around

NORTH RIM, AZ -- The shady side of our home for the summer still shelters a four-foot snowbank.
Inside, we have carpets, drapes, our own thermostat and our own bathroom. It isn't the Ritz, but after 14 days
living in a van (plus two nights spent in a Santa Fe motel) it feels quite spacious.
It took some doing to get here. Headed south out of Kanab, UT, we kept seeing signs warning us that the road to the North Rim was closed. That turned out to be true. Fortunately, there was a human there to look at our paperwork and open the gate. He also gave us the combination to the second gate, 30 miles down the road, which will not open to the public until Saturday. It was a pleasant drive along a road lined with the snow-sculptures remaining after the snowplows did their work.
After the usual employment drill -- prove citizenship, fill out tax forms, arrange for direct deposit, take saliva drug test -- we unloaded the van and went for our first look at the Grand Canyon from this side. The main difference I noticed is that it's a lot greener. There are evergreens as well as pink rocks down in that big hole.
So far, so good. Tuesday we have orientation and training, otherwise known as sitting in class all day.
