Plateau lizardNORTH RIM, AZ -- Prince Charming and I used our first joint day off to go on our first real hike here. We went down the Kaibab trail for an easy two miles, and then turned around to slog back uphill to the car.
We spotted only small wildlife, which is a big difference from our past two jobs. At Yosemite, bears regularly broke into cars in the parking lot just a few feet from our cabin. In Denali, we often saw moose, caribou and grizzlies.
Last week a park ranger told us there are bears in Grand Canyon National Park, but they are so rare that a sighting is reported about once every 10 years. There are a few deer around, but we've been told a lot more will show up as the summer progresses.
We've seen the elusive Kaibab squirrel, black body, white tail, tall ears, a few times, but never when we had cameras close by. So we felt pretty lucky to see the three natives above in just a four-mile hike.
