The herd hangs outCopyright 2006 Lydia Hinshaw
SUSANVILLE, CA -- Near Orick, CA, this morning, we came upon a herd of perhaps 50 elk standing around in the water while about half that many humans stood beside their parked cars taking pictures.
It's the rut, or mating season, for elk, so this group included several bulls and their harems. The bulls pretty much stood around keeping an eye on things, but the cows were more active, running around a bit, though never far from the rest of the herd.
Occasionally one of the bulls would bugle, producing the haunting, high-pitched call that is part of the mating ritual.
After enjoying the spectacle for 20 minutes, we moved on, so some other spectators could have our parking space.
