Wild, wonderful...Nevada!

The little rattler was about a foot long

WILLIAMS, AZ -- Prince Charming and I, road-weary after three weeks in transit, spent the weekend as pampered houseguests in Nevada.
My brother and I swapped old family stories, while my sister-in-law cooked us outstanding meals.
Carla the dog was her frenetic, energetic, annoying, engaging self.
Sunday we took a drive in search of outdoor adventures, leaving a furious Carla barking and pounding her paws against the dining-room window that overlooks the driveway.
It was a good thing she wasn't along when we ran into the rattlesnake, which could probably move even faster than Carla can.

My sister-in-law believes she stepped on the snake, which responded by striking her foot hard enough to bruise it. Fortunately, his fangs didn't penetrate her shoe.
The Prince and I felt quite lucky, because we had ventured out into the wilderness in sport sandals. We should have known better, but we've been too far north for too long. Snakes don't hang out in Alaska or the Yukon.
On the way home, we spotted three wild horses who were kind enough to perform for my zoom lens. There are wild horses all over the vast emptiness of the Nevada desert, but usually they are just specks in the distance. These three were frolicking close enough to the road for a good picture.
